The Bills, Chiefs, Steelers and Titans are on their Bye this week so be sure to not include them in your starting roster.
Let’s have a look at what you can expect in Week Six.
BEARS (3-2) @ FALCONS (3-2)
Both teams come off a Week Five win as the Bears pummeled the hapless Lions and the Falcons went into Lambeau Field and upset the Packers.
Beasts
RB Matt Forte is the leading Rookie Of The Year candidate and Atlanta ranks 21st in rushing defense having given up 629 rush yards through 5 games. Look for another huge day out of this Rookie stud. You have to love the fact that Forte is leading the Bears with 22 pass receptions.
The Bears defense is giving up an average of just 74 rush yards per game, but you can’t sit RB Michael Turner who leads the league in rushing and is averaging 5.4 yards per carry.
The Bears defense is giving up big chunks of passing yards and is ranked 23rd. They are giving up an average of 223.4 yards a game through the air. Look for the Falcons to air it out and try to get the Bears back on there heals to open some running lanes for RB Turner. Bears corner Brent Grimes has been burned badly in each of the past weeks. This bodes well for WR Roddy White and QB Matt Ryan at home in the Georgia Dome. White did take a blow to the head in practice on Wednesday and was help out of practice on Thursday so check the injury report on Friday before starting him.
The Falcons are equally inept at stopping the pass the challenge here is trying to figure out which Bears receiver will burn the Falcons. With WR Brandon Lloyd still out with a sprained PCL look for WR/PK Devin Hester and WR Rashied Davis to step it up.
Busts
Despite all the talk of how good the Bears defense is, we see this as a high scoring affair and don’t see any legitimate busts in this game.
Stats Sleeper
TE Desmond Clark is still listed as the #1 TE in Chicago but the big play ability of TE Greg Olsen puts him in line for a big day against the suspect Falcons defense. If the Bears roll double coverage to WR White or if he can’t go WR Michael Jenkins could be worth a flyer in deeper leagues.
DOLPHINS (2-2) @ TEXANS (0-4)
After a 0-2 start the Dolphins and their new look “Wildcat” formation have now beat the Patriots and Chargers to get to 2-2 while the Texans blew a 17 point lead with three turnovers in a 2:10 fourth quarter span and lost to the Colts to fall to 0-4.
Beasts
Lining up in the single wing formation has gotten RB Ronnie Brown and extra eight or so touches a game. The Texans rank 26th against the run giving up an average of 139 rush yards a game making Brown a must-start at running back this week.
The Dolphins have given up seven touchdown passes on the season so look for WR Andre Johnson to have a big as the Dolphins try to bottled up the run and force the Texans to pass. QB Matt Schaub is trying to hold of Sage Rosenfels and with the Dolphins stuffing the run; he will be forced to air it out.
TE Owen Daniels continues to be a large part of the Texans offense and will act as a safety valve for QB Schaub. He has 16 catches in his last three games but is still looking for his first TD of the season.
Busts
Texans rookie RB has been impressive in recent weeks but RB Ahman Green is back, healthy and stealing some his touches. Last week the Dolphins contained LaDainian Tomlinson so we don’t have big expectations for the rookie in this one.
QB Chad Pennington continues to be a guy who won’t help you much at the QB spot and his receiving core is spotty and mediocre at best. We can’t recommend any of them.
Stats Sleeper
With Schaub back under center, look for WR Kevin Walter to get back on track.
RAVENS (2-2) @ COLTS (2-2)
The Colts needed a meltdown by the Texans to escape with a win while the Ravens battled hard before falling to the unbeaten Titans in Week 5. The Colts find themselves in the unusual position of looking up at the 5-0 Tennessee Titans and have looked out of sort all season. The now face a tough Ravens defense which is ranked first in both rushing and passing defense. The Ravens will try to control the clock with their power rushing attack.
Beasts
Whoever starts at running back for the Ravens will have a monster game. The Colts are giving up and average of; get this, 188.5 rush yards a game good for last overall in the NFL. If you have RB Willis McGahee or LeRon McClain get them started here. McGahee is not 100% but is expected to get the start. McClain is always active though and is a TD vulture at the goal line.
WR Reggie Wayne and QB Payton Manning finally appear to have their chemistry back in tact and will look to spread the field. It’s no lock that either of them will have a good day against the Ravens stout defense but you just can’t sit them. WR Anthony Gonzalez participated in the full practice on Thursday and should start against the Ravens. Look for Gonzalez to get a lot looks and touches from the slot position.
Busts
The Ravens will run and then run and then run some more so look for nothing but a very mediocre day out of QB Joe Flacko and his group of receivers and TE Todd Heap.
Colts RB Joseph Addai is a tough sit after back-to-back solid weeks, but it’s recommended that you do so here if you have other options at RB.
Colts WR Marvin Harrison has been hit with a lawsuit over a gun incident back in April so his concentration level will not be at it’s highest.
Stats Sleeper
With the Ravens bringing constant and heavy pressure expect TE Dallas Clark to be very active in the passing game. A year ago you couldn’t classify Clark as a sleeper but based on his early 2008 production, some owners may have forgotten about him. He caught five passes for 81 yards in Week Five and looks to be back to near 100% healthy. Get him active again!
LIONS (0-4) @ VIKINGS (2-3)
The Lions were blown out, dismantled, embarrassed and destroyed by the Bears while the Vikings got a gift win from the Saints in Week 5. More of the same for the Lions while the Vikings look like anything but a playoff contender. This is one of only two divisional match-ups this weekend.
Beasts
We have called RB Adrian Peterson a bust a year and he has been. He proved it again against the Saints defense on Monday Night Football. This is the Lions though, so look for AP to have a monster game.
Lions QB Jon Kitna is nursing a sore back and is doubtful to start. QB Dan Orlovsky is working through a mild ankle injury and former Michigan State QB Drew Stanton says he is healthy and ready to go. Regardless of who starts at QB (Orlvosky is likely to get the call) Lions WR’s Johnson and Williams should be active as we are sure the Lions will be back to playing catch up football again this week. The Vikings have yet to prove that they can defend against the pass
Busts
The Vikings are hurt all over at WR with only WR Bobby Wade not listed on the injury report. We expect all AP all day and, even though the Lions are horrible on defense, we can’t recommend anyone else other then AP.
The Vikings shows signs of life in being able to stop the run on Monday night and won’t have any problems shutting down either of the Lions running backs.
Stats Sleeper
With all the injuries at WR for the Vikings, this is a good spot to start Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe.
RAIDERS (1-2) @ SAINTS (2-3)
The Raiders were on their bye while PK Martin Gramatica gift-wrapped a Saints loss to the Vikings in Week 5. Gramatica is now on injured reserve and should leave football for good. The Raiders try to start from scratch with interim Head Coach Tom Gable who was the Raiders offensive line coach after the expected firing of Lane Kiffin. Not sure why he would want the job but when opportunity knocks; I guess you have to answer.
Beasts
The Saints have to be stunned by how their season has gone to date and will look to take it out on the Raiders who have been playing decent defense but will be over matched here. Look for a huge game from QB Drew Brees and RB Reggie Bush. We also expect WR Lance Moore to get back on track in this one as the WR “flavor of the week” for the Saints. If you have Saints wideouts beware because they will all drop off somewhat once WR Marcus Colston comes back. Colston has participated in limited practice two days this week and should be back in Week 7. There is an outside chance he could start Sunday, but be sure to check the Sunday active list before penciling him in.
TE Zach Miller has started to produce as a low-end TE1 and should have a good outing against a suspect Saints pass defense.
Busts
Despite the Saints weak defense we don’t trust any of the Raiders receivers or QB Russell.
Stats Sleeper
RB Justin Fargas is listed as probable for Sunday’s game and should be considered as a high end RB2 in all formats.
BENGALS (0-5) @ JETS (2-2)
The Bengals hung with Cowboys before giving up 14 fourth quarter points and falling 31-22. The Jets had a week off to lick their wounds after the Week 4 beating they took in San Diego. The Bengals at 0-5 have not played as bad as their record indicates and the Jets have been up and down through four games.
Beasts
Jets QB Brett Favre comes off a bye week and has had one more week to get familiar with the Jets offense. Expect it to be bombs away for the Jets and that means starting Favre and WR’s Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Crothery.
Busts
We would not recommend starting any of the running backs in this game. Bengals RB Chris Perry has fumbled five times already and will start losing touches to newly acquired RB Cedric Benson. Jets RB Thomas Jones appears slow through four games and is being challenged by RB’s Leon Washington and Jessie Chapman. Chatman has rejoined the Jets after a four game suspension for drug use. You should also avoid starting any of the TE’s in this game. QB Palmer has been ruled out on Sunday and that makes every Bengal a risky option. We would avoid everyone from the Bengals.
Stats Sleeper
With all the attention being paid to Housh and Ocho in Cincinnati, WR Antonio Chapman has been allowed to roam free. He has 17 catches in four starts ( 6 against the Giants and 7 against the Cowboys) and is worth a flier at the flex position in points per reception leagues.
PANTHERS (4-1) @ BUCCANEERS (3-2)
The Panthers shut out the Chiefs while the Bucs lost by a field goal to the Broncos in Week 5. This is the only other divisional game on the schedule this weekend. With a win and a Falcons loss, the Panthers can take a two game lead in the NFC South.
Beasts
The Panthers have been clicking on all cylinders to start the season. The Bucs rank 21st against the pass and have given up 8 passing TD’s. That bodes well for QB Jake Delhomme and WR’s Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad.
Busts
The Bucs switch back to QB Jeff Garcia with QB Brian Griese nursing an Elbow injury. This is not the most comfortable spot for Garcia to come back into as the Panthers are 3rd against the pass. Despite being hot with 21 catches in his last three games we advise sitting Bucs WR Antonio Bryant.
The Panthers and Bucs both have good run stopping defenses ranking 13th and 14 respectively. Temper your expectations of all RB’s in this game.
RAMS (0-4) @ REDSKINS (4-1)
The Redskins played their final divisional road game in Week 5 and beat the Eagles 23-17 to take first place in the tough NFC East. The Rams were on a bye. The Redskins have been very impressive to start the season and everyone seems to have be buying what Heach Coach Jim Zorn is selling. The Rams turn the page and try to start fresh with new Head Coach Jim Haslett who’s first move was to reinstate QB Marc Bulger as the starter.
Not going to spend a lot of time here. Start your Redskins including QB Jason Campbell, RB Clinton Portis and TE Chris Cooley.
Sit yours Rams that don’t have the name Steven Jackson. Give it at least a week to see if anything changes under HC Haslett. Somehow we doubt it.
JAGUARS @ BRONCOS
The Broncos behind (surprise) their defense squeaked by the Bucs while the Jaguars lost a hard fought game (while gaining just 38 rush yards) to the Steelers in Week 5. Expect the Jaguars to be in a very physical game again this weekend.
Beasts
The Broncos are giving up an average of 134 rush yards a game through five. Expect that trend to continue as the Jaguars got away from “chopping wood” last week and it cost them. RB’s Maurice Jones-Drew should have a field day here. RB Fred Taylor will get his share as well. As bad as they are on run defense, the Broncos are even worse against the pass giving up an average of 254 a game to rank third last in the league. This is nice spot for QB David Garrard if your QB1 has a tough match-up or is on a bye.
At 26th against the pass the Jaguars are not much better than the Broncos. Expect a big day out of QB Jay Cutler and WR Brandon Marshall.
Stats Sleeper(s)
The Bronco’s will be without RB Selvin Young and WR Eddie Royal. Look for RB Michael Pittman and WR Brandon Stokley to step up in their absence. With all the injuries the Jaguars have in their secondary the majority of pass yards should go to WR Matt Jones and TE Marcedes Lewis.
COWBOYS (4-1) @ CARDINALS (3-2)
The Cowboys turned it on and off and then on again to beat the Bengals while the Cardinals put the pedal to medal and thrashed the Bills. This is an important game for both teams but more so for the Cardinals who want to back up last week’s destruction of the Bills with back-to-back wins after their Week 4 embarrassing loss to the Jets. University Of Phoenix Stadium will be jumping as it’s a very high-energy facility.
This will be the classic shoot out so all you need to know is that you should start all your stars from both of these teams and reap the rewards. The final could be in the 45-38 range.
EAGLES (2-3) @ 49ERS (2-3)
The Eagles jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but lost the Redskins while the Niners got beat by an angry Patriots team. After promising 2-1 starts both these teams have lost two in a row and are searching for answers. The Eagles more so than the Niners – the Niners were supposed to be good and they weren’t.
Beasts
The Eagles have lost RB Westbrook for at least one as he deals with his ankle injury and two cracked ribs from the Redskins game. Being as the Niners rank 23rd in rush defense this has to be heartbreaking for his owners. Start RB Correll Buckhalter with confidence. The Niners gave up 259 pass yards to QB Matt Cassel in Week 5. QB Donovan McNabb should torch them for at least 350. Look for WR DeShean to bounce back from his one catch eight-yard outing from Week Five.
Busts
The Eagles entered Week Five with the league’s leading defense and then got slapped around by QB Campbell and RB Portis of the Redskins. They will be an angry group and, being as such, we can’t recommend any of the 49ers starters in this game.
Stats Sleeper
TE L.J. Smith returns healthy for the Eagles and finds himself in a nice spot here.
PACKERS (2-3) @ SEAHAWKS (1-3)
The Packers were surprised at home and lost to the Falcons while the Seahawks went to the East coast and got destroyed by the Giants. This is another matchup that is pivotal to both teams. The Packers are a game back of the Bears while the Seahawks find themselves down two games to the Cardinals.
Beasts
QB Aaron Rodgers played through a strained shoulder in Week 5 and tossed 3 TD’s. The Seahawks rank 25th in pass defense and were torched by Eli Manning last week. Expect more of the same and be sure to start Rodgers and WR Greg Jennings.
The Packers have given up over 175 rush yards in three straight weeks so look for Seahawks RB Julius Jones to have a huge game. This is especially true since the Seahawks will be starting QB Charlie Frey as QB Matt Hasselbeck continues to deal with a knee injury.
Busts
RB Ryan Grant continues to be a huge bust and we don’t see that changing in the hostile environment is Seattle.
With QB Hasselbeck out and QB Frey in, expect pedestrian numbers out of the entire Seahawks receivers’ core.
PATRIOTS (3-1) @ CHARGERS (2-3)
The Patriots regrouped on their bye week and beat the 49ers while the Chargers looked horrible in losing to the Dolphins on the road in Week 5. Thanks to their cake schedule, the Patriots are 3-1 but play on the west coast for the second straight week against their familiar playoff foes in San Diego. The Chargers are looking to bounce back from an embarrassing loss to the Fins and find themselves two games back of the Broncos.
Expect a shoot here and start all your Patriots and Chargers that have been producing in recent weeks.
The exceptions would be Patriots RB Lawrence Maroney who is a bust and dealing with a shoulder injury and Chargers WR Chris Chambers who is expected to sit with an ankle injury.
Stats Sleeper
With WR Chambers sidelined expect RB Darren Sproles to play a larger in the Chargers offense.
GIANTS (4-0) @ BROWNS (1-3)
The Giants blew out the Seahawks while the Browns were on a Bye in Week Five.
Can anyone tell the StatsGuru what we did to deserve this Monday Night match-up?
This is the second last in a long string of cake games the Super Bowl Champs have enjoyed as they get the 49ers next week before beginning what can on be described as a brutal ten game stretch. Enjoy the winning streak while you can G-Men fans, it’s not going to last much longer.
No need to spend any time here.
Start your Giants and sit your Browns.
That’s a wrap for Week Six.
Here’s hoping your week is point prosperous and injury free!
Enjoy the Games!
